Gastrointestinal symptoms of Coronavirus (Covid-19)

Fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath are the main symptoms of Covid-19. But we may often overlook other common symptoms, such as an upset stomach.

A recent study of more than 200 patients admitted to three hospitals in Hubei, China (a province that started with the SARS-COV-2 virus) with mild symptoms of Covid-19 showed that almost one in five patients had at least one digestion question. Diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, and about 80% also have no appetite.

These symptoms can be caused by other common causes such as stomach flu or food poisoning, and if you have Covid-19, digestive problems may reduce you and make your gastrointestinal symptoms worse.

Relationship between gastrointestinal tract and Coronavirus:

Any virus that infects your body can kill healthy cells and make different versions. Covid-19 mainly attacks cells that control their airways. This can cause you to breathe and get pneumonia. But researchers think it could damage your digestive system and liver tissue.

This study in China showed that one-third of people with Covid-19 have diarrhea. This problem, including juicy stools, was usually not severe. Diarrhea lasted an average of 5 days.

People with gastrointestinal symptoms may have a positive stool test for Coronavirus, meaning they have SARS-COV-2 RNA in their stool. It also takes longer for the other body to clear the virus than for people without gastrointestinal symptoms.

Things to do:

Having diarrhea, nausea or vomiting does not mean you have Covid-19. But it is wise to pay more attention to your symptoms during illness, especially if you have a health condition that increases the risk of infection or you live in an area where the coronavirus is high.

Staying at home: Most people who test positive for coronary arteries are mild and get better without treatment. Avoid going unless you really need to, such as seeing a doctor.

Have a toilet in the patient’s bedroom: If you can use a separate toilet to prevent the spread of fecal disease if you live with others.

Wash your hands regularly: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet, coughing or sneezing, and before eating or cooking, and the best hand sanitizer with at least 60 Alcohol.

Clean and disinfect surfaces regularly: These include toilet seats and hoses, bathroom handles, telephones, and other items that you touch frequently.

Drink plenty of fluids: If you have diarrhea or vomiting, it is important to replace lost fluids. A good solution is an oral hydration solution because it contains salt and sugar that your body loses due to diarrhea.

Have a healthy diet: Try foods like bananas, white rice, apples, and toast, which can repel your cravings, and you can also try oats, potatoes, and cooked chicken.

When calling a doctor:

If your stomach problems are due to gastritis or food poisoning, you should usually feel well within 48 hours. If you do not feel it after 48 hours, call your doctor as this could be a serious bacterial infection or an early sign of Covid-19. You should also see a doctor immediately because:

You may be severely dry. Symptoms include dark urine, severe weakness, dry mouth and tongue, and dizziness.

Have diarrhea, bleeding, or black or severe abdominal pain.

You have a fever, cough, or shortness of breath.
