is a messy house a sign of mental illness

Whether you enjoy or despise cleaning, the state of your home can reveal a lot about your personality. The act of washing dishes and organizing your clothes can also provide insight into your character. By tidying your environment, you can learn more about yourself.

Characterizing individuals based on the cleanliness of their home:

  1. Everything they dispose of is put away in drawers, closets, or boxes.

At first glance, the rooms of these individuals appear neat because the floor is tidy and books are organized. The walls are spotless as well, but upon examining a drawer or shelf, one will find broken scissors, old pens, ripped papers, and other discarded items. These individuals prioritize appearances and invest a great deal in presenting their best features. It is easy for them to conceal parts of their personality until they can eliminate those aspects themselves. They also seek to make everything look appealing and have a desire to clean things thoroughly.

  1. There are at least a few broken items in their room.

Many individuals tend to reside in environments with outdated and sometimes malfunctioning appliances. They do not allocate a lot of money to cleaning these items and often treat them as temporary. These individuals tend to live in these temporary spaces for extended periods, sometimes up to a decade. Psychologically, they do not pay much attention to the future and only see what is in front of them. They are willing to endure the discomfort and hardships of the present because they believe it will not last long. They also lack a specific plan for their lives.

Characterizing individuals based on a messy home:

  1. Their workspace is disorderly.

A person’s workspace is an ideal place to identify their personality. Some individuals have impeccably organized files and place each one on its own shelf, while others mix everything together. All of their papers, pens, notebooks, pencils, and laptops are grouped in one area, making it difficult to find anything. Additionally, a thick layer of dust covers their equipment. This behavior reflects high self-confidence. While their desk may be messy, these individuals are active and able to locate everything they need easily. This is not necessarily a negative characteristic, as it displays creativity and innovation. These people are often able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, but others may perceive them as peculiar.

  1. Their sink is full of dishes, their laundry basket is full of clothes, and their trash can is overflowing.

Only a few individuals enjoy cleaning their surroundings, and some detest it or even fear it. They typically pile their garbage on a section of their balcony and do not attend to it until the smell spreads throughout the area. They also do not wash their dishes until they have no more dishes to use. Procrastination is a common issue for many people, and it often affects daily tasks. While it may seem reasonable to delay some tasks, when individuals repeatedly avoid certain tasks, it is a problem. They continually rationalize their behavior.

For instance, individuals may make statements such as “I am lazy” or “I don’t have time” or “I’ll do it tomorrow.” If you have someone in your life who exhibits these characteristics, try giving them small tasks to do so that they become accustomed to completing everything on time. These people should attempt to change their habits as they will face numerous issues in the future.

  1. They believe that they are the only ones who live around them.

Certain individuals make their homes appear as though they are only a place to sleep, with very little furniture, and sometimes without basic appliances like gas stoves or refrigerators. These kinds of apartments may be suitable for students who spend little time at home, but many people live in these apartments for extended periods and feel comfortable.

They prefer to keep their home environment empty, which suggests that they may have psychological issues, such as immaturity. They are still waiting for someone else to help them and arrange their space, for example, they believe that in the future they will find a partner who will organize their apartment in the best possible way.

  1. They carelessly leave leftovers in the kitchen.

The kitchen should be the cleanest place in the house since it is where food is prepared and consumed. Oils, fats, coffee, and tea stains should not be present in this area since it discourages individuals from eating there and poses a health hazard. However, some individuals do not place a lot of emphasis on keeping the kitchen clean.

This issue may not always be due to laziness. Studies indicate that failure to clean the house may be a symptom of depression. Individuals in this condition typically do not have enough energy to maintain cleanliness, and they do not value themselves enough to believe that they deserve to live in a clean environment. On the other hand, maintaining a clean house indicates high morale and a person’s ability to combat depression symptoms.

  1. Individuals with untidy bathrooms.

You may have seen commercials on television that depict the bathroom as the cleanest place in the house. The faucets in the bathroom should always be sparkling, and cleanliness in the bathroom makes people feel more relaxed. It is true that taking a hot bath or cold shower can greatly impact an individual’s emotions, and various scents in the bathroom can affect a person’s psyche.

A clean bathroom indicates that the individual takes care of themselves and not only their physical appearance but also their soul and spirit. It demonstrates the orderliness of the individual in all aspects of life.

Body oils, quality toothpaste, face creams, and body lotion in the bathroom indicate that the individual is concerned about their health and beauty. However, if you see a Gillette razor with dried soap in the bathroom, this may suggest that the person is stressed and neglecting self-care.

  1. They have many accessories.

Some individuals find it difficult to part with their belongings. These items may include household items that are unnecessary to keep, such as old furniture or unused bicycles. In such instances, this behavior demonstrates a conservative personality that avoids changing their way of life.

They tend to hold on to everything they own and feel secure doing so. Typically, these individuals lack inner peace and are afraid of losing everything in life. Often, they hoard items and do not give anything up.

What about the opposite of a messy house? What about places that are excessively clean? There are people who spend their spare time cleaning their living environment, which is not necessarily a bad thing. However, if a person pays too much attention to cleanliness, it may indicate an underlying issue with their mental health.

People who are overly obsessed with cleanliness may feel uncomfortable having guests over to their house because they fear their guests may dirty their immaculate environment. This trait shows that these individuals are extremely detail-oriented and perfectionists. They are anxious about germs, dirt, and pollution, which reflects in their overall demeanor. These people may use cleaning as a way to distract themselves from negative thoughts and to fight stress. They can be difficult to please and often hold others to their high standards, feeling happy and confident only when things are exactly as they want them.
